A trigger point injection is an outpatient procedure designed to reduce or relieve the back pain caused by trigger points. These small knots can form in muscles or in the fascia tissue leading to myofascial pain.
The injection may be an anesthetic such as lidocaine (Xylocaine) or bupivacaine (Marcaine), a mixture of anesthetics, or a corticosteroid (cortisone medication) alone or mixed with lidocaine. The corticosteroids remain in the tissue in active form for about one month.
